Final Bow: A Reflection on the Past Year
I’m writing this month’s blog post with a heavy heart as my time with First Shift is coming to a close. For the past eleven months I had the privilege of coordinating our Virginia outreach programming and working alongside a wonderful group of people. This entire experience was such a massive transition for me, and I am so appreciative of the family environment First Shift provided right from the start. I want to extend a special shout out to my supervisor for coaching me and providing me with invaluable professional development.
For readers who are unfamiliar with my situation, I am a temporary employee through a program called Avodah. Avodah is a Jewish social justice service corps that connects young Jewish professionals with non-profit organizations across the country. The goal of the program is to provide a pluralistic Jewish home experience paired with real professional development at a full time job. After an elaborate matching process I was connected with First Shift Justice Project.
I’m originally from Little Rock, Arkansas. As I’m sure you can imagine, the Jewish population of Arkansas is very small. I chose to join Avodah primarily as a way to connect with other Jewish people my age. I’m proud to say I formed a tight bond with my cohort and have developed friendships that will last a lifetime. Pictured below is all of us at the Avodah National Retreat where we won first place in the Lip Sync Battle.
It was at First Shift Justice Project, though, where I was really able to develop as a person. Prior to this experience I had largely been involved with non-profit organizations through internships and volunteer work. First Shift gave me the support and confidence to work independently and explore my strengths in the workplace. I found that I have a passion for relationship building, education, and advocacy. This experience showed me how legal knowledge, when communicated clearly, can genuinely change the trajectory of someone’s life.
I want to close out with a small note looking towards the future. My future is back in Little Rock. I am excited to return to my community and use my new toolset to pursue local advocacy. I want to start by advocating for anyone reading this to visit Little Rock. I promise it’s an amazing place full of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.
